This week, we're going to talk about the work of a young development #practitioner, one whose research area includes #political #development and #labour #economics particularly informality, exclusion and structural transformation in labour surplus economies.
She has gained international recognition for her research work on the shadow economy in India. She is none other than 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐡𝐢 𝐊𝐞𝐬𝐚𝐫.

Surbhi Kesar is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the School of Arts and Sciences at Azim Premji University, Bengaluru.
She did her PhD from South Asian University, New Delhi and was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Her work on dualistic nature between capitalistic and non-capitalistic economic spaces (appeared in the Review of Radical Political Economics) throws light on the vast informal sector in India showing how #dualism was reproduced during past decade of high economic growth.
She has received #awards at the Regulating for Decent Work Conference at International Labor Organisation, Geneva, Switzerland and from the Indian Society of #Labour #Economics. The link for the paper is shared below:

She recently co-authored a working paper: ‘Pandemic, informality, and vulnerability: Impact of COVID-19 on livelihoods in India’ highlighting the impact of #COVID19 pandemic containment measures ( #lockdown) on employment, livelihood, food security and access to relief measures.
It shows that a lot more is needed in the way of direct #fiscal support that was announced thus far by #state and #central governments.
