When I was in my early 20's I had a recipe I wanted to make that called for ground sausage

I went to the grocery story & they didn't have any. I asked the meat guy if he could make me some & he looked at me like I was mentally handicapped & said "just open up a sausage" (1)
This concept was stunning to me

I can't just... open a sausage! That's not what the recipe call for! What is the sausage police come after me? They wouldn't sell it as a sausage if they expect you to just open it up! (2)
That was one of my early introductions to the world of "people who do things" vs "people who consume things"

This guy looked at me like I had absolutely no sense whatsoever

I saw products on the shelves with labels and names, he saw that they were made of base components (3)
I don't know who he was or any of his background. But I had a degree from a very respected institute of higher education having aced classes in quantum physics and differential equations.

And I was clearly the idiot in that situation. (4)
I think everyone should feel like an idiot on a regular basis or you're just not experiencing enough of life to make it all worth living.
