As a Chinese-American geriatrician, I am unable to sleep tonight from all the pent up anger in one day. Read on as I tell you the ways. 1
I am angry that covid is killing and hurting so many older adults and people simply don’t care enough to mask up and stay socially distanced. #olderadultlivesmatter #agism. My patients are either dying, wish they could die from social isolation or rapidly declining in health 2
I am angry that some people are still calling covid-19 the “Chinese virus” and my own state senator has promised to constituents like myself that he will “hold China responsible” while every other country on the planet has done a better job than us at controlling the spread 3
I’m angry that mothers everywhere are disproportionally shouldering the burden of caregiving to children and their parents while there is no support. Never mind the intersectionality of being BIPOC and a mother. Mothers’ careers will never be the same because of this pandemic 4
I’m angry that no matter how many times I introduce myself as Dr. Yang, inevitably whoever I’m speaking with always responds back to me as “m’am”. Only my optometrist tech called me Doc without introducing myself as such. 4
I’m angry that @CMSGov cut reimbursement to providers providing medical care to patients in nursing homes, assisted living, and home care medicine. While office-based primary care patient volume decreased, our home-based primary care volume increased to meet the demands of pts 5
I’m angry that older adults, Blacks, Hispanics are routinely not well represented in clinical trials plus years of generational trauma around medical research that the most vulnerable groups have the most distrust of medical system. I don’t blame them. 6
I’m angry that mediocre men seem to fall upward and get promoted while spectacular women work themselves to the ground and still feel like they failed because we have been conditioned to be perfect while that is impossible. Thanks #patriarchy. 7
I’m angry that schools are closed yet bars and restaurants are open. Small businesses have no financial help while big companies can get bailouts. Again, why care about the emotional health of children, mothers, and teachers? 8
I’m angry that I’m the middle of pandemic when unemployment is at an all time high and people of all walks of life are going hungry, 45 is trying to take away ACA and the ability to purchase health insurance not tied to employment. 9
I’m angry that my 4yo got in trouble with her school because she told her friends that Santa is not real and another parent complained to the principal and we got a “FYI” email 10. Thanks for reading my venting.
