@GovCanHealth has locked in the contract for another 20m doses of Moderna vax, making a total of 40m. And has contracted for 20m doses of Pfizer vax: enough for 30m people. Both should begin arriving in January. What does this imply for current strategy? https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/feds-secure-more-moderna-vaccines-sign-deal-with-fedex-to-ship-doses-1.5217363
First, important to recognize that it will take time. Both vaccines are 2 doses (3 or 4 weeks apart) and were tested for their immune effect 2 weeks after second dose. And we will be lucky to get 10m doses by March.
Second, the imminent arrival of vaccines means that the value of not getting covid now is increasing. Third, the foreseeable end of the pandemic means that we absolutely can, as a society, afford to pay people to avoid work in risky indoor environments like bars.
Fourth, we need to think hard about messaging. Right now, many people think that only the elderly are at risk. Once the elderly are vaccinated and have reduced risk, some people are going to let down their guard. How do we maintain caution?
Only mandated rules are going to be effective. We should be carefully observing what happens in the UK they start vaccinating the elderly and healthcare workers there.
