December 1 is the anniversary of Dr. Elana Fric's death. I left my marriage in October 2016 and she left a month later. She didn't survive and I did. The man she was escaping was sentenced to 14 years in prison for her murder.

Elana was smart, successful and funny. Abusers target good people. They rely on your nurturing instincts so that you will forgive them.

You can be an ally by standing by what is right and wrong, acceptable and unacceptable.
Don't make excuses for abusers, no "he didn't mean it" "he must have been in a bad mood" "you must have aggravated him"
Say "I hear you" "Are you safe?"

Educate yourself about manipulative behaviour and narcissistic abuse. You can give someone the language to articulate their experience, and grow to understand their situation.

You can lend a hand. Offer a safe space in the short term or long term. Help with the kids and check in to see if $20 or $100 might help get her through the month. The first year is really hard.
I have been personally touched by gendered violence in ways that have changed my life. This is happening to people you love, even if they haven't shared it with you yet. Do the work to understand and be there for them in their time of need.
