Terrible
The commodification of these looted antiquities goes against all archaeological ethics. Many of them are clearly illegal w/ provenance postdating the 1970 UNESCO convention
The kicker is that doing this for charitable causes acts to legitimize the whole thing

I'm still upset with this
While the mission of @classicsforall is laudable, the ends do not justify the means. Same with @profmcscott and his public engagement
Legitimizing the sale of antiquities promotes looting & celebrates an elite, colonial approach to the ancient world

Looting harms cultural heritage and does irreparable harm
Looting destroys the #context of archaeological artifacts
That seriously impedes our understanding of the past
I have a whole thread on this: https://twitter.com/FlintDibble/status/1163435944642588673?s=19

Let's hope this will turn into a learning moment for @classicsforall and #ClassicsTwitter more broadly
Buying and selling antiquities goes against archaeological ethics. Full stop https://twitter.com/AlexImrie23/status/1335181489294741506?s=19

Ironic that @stephenfry, recently turned into material culture as a lego, participates in this auction that unethically sells ancient material culture

Nice to see an organization respond to complaints on Twitter. I sure hope they back away from this unethical position and write a strong post condemning cultural heritage trade

A very interesting thread by @artcrimeprof delving into the shady history behind these artifacts and the tax benefits this event will yield for their owner
@classicsforall needs to stop this auction and commit to never legitimizing the antiquities market https://twitter.com/artcrimeprof/status/1335626595546099722?s=19
