“Now that it’s raining more than ever, know that we still have each other. You can stand under my umbrella.”

– Rihanna

I entered the elevator alone one evening after a long day. Leaning my head back on the wall, I prepared for a peaceful ride to the ground floor.

Yep.

After passing 6 floors, the lift stopped on the 5th floor. When the door separated, I opened my eyes and saw one of the Grady environmental services employees standing there with two giant rolling trash bins and a bunch of other stuff for cleaning.

He stepped back.

Him: *waving his hand* “I’m cool, doc. I got a lot of stuff. I'll just get the next one.”
Me: *stepping aside* “Nah. It’s cool. Come on.”

And so he did.

Me: *glancing at him* “You good today?”
Him: “Yes ma’am. ‘Bout to drop this stuff off & go to the hizzouse!”

*laughter*

Me: “That’s what’s up. I’m headed honme, too.”
Him: “You got your umbrella, doc? You know it’s coming down BAD out there.”
Me: *groaning* “For real? Shoot.”

I checked my @darkskyapp to see how long it would last.

*SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS FOR THE NEXT HOUR.*

Me: “Uuuggggh!”
5/
I got to the ground floor, stepped off of the elevator, and reached the door. Then I just stood there staring through the glass at the sheets of rain pouring down.

Severe thunderstorms indeed. And no umbrella in sight.

Ugggh.

I looked at my watch then back at the rain. 630PM & dark. I was tired. And just ready to go home to my family.

And before you ask why I didn't just make a break for it, know this: This wasn't that kind of rain.

Nope.

I sighed and mumbled a few expletives under my breath.

And then I heard my something:

Him: “Hey doc!”
Me: *swings around to see guy from elevator jogging up behind me*
Him: “Here you go.” *laughs* “It's not an umbrella but it might help some. Good luck out there.”

He placed something in my hand, waved, and then hustled off.

A plastic trashcan liner.

Yup.

Fancy? Nah. But I bet I was nice and dry when I reached my car.

Even in a severe thunderstorm.

Little mercies and miracles are everywhere if you pay attention. Even in the time of COVID.

I love this place.🏥♥️
