Based on the data, we can answer the following: What word is the most frequently used over a 20-year period? 2) What are the relationship trends in the relationship between China and these two countries? 3) Can we conclude a Chinese view of the relationships?
The content analysis analyzed 21 CPC documents, which the overall word count for the study was 517 different indicator words that were relevant to Japan or the United States. The most frequented word in the study was Cooperation at 69 times.
The research can locate the more frequently used word in the relationships, there is clear evidence of trends in the relationships, and as well as a clear picture of China’s view of the relationships.
Based on my research, I analyzed 192 different indicator words and the most frequented was the cooperation (P) at 33 times. The relationship between China and Japan from the Chinese perspective over the past 20-years has been up and down.
In 2012, the Diaoyu island disputes, caused significant harm to the relationship, however, in 2013, the relationship slowly recovered. Based on the word frequency, I can conclude that China has maintained their stance on Japan as one wishing cooperation, consultation, and mutual
respect. The relationship between the United States and China from the Chinese perspective is much more complex. However, during the analysis, I analyzed a total of 325 different indicator words and the most frequented was cooperation (P) at 36 times.
The relationship again has also been of mixed origin. The selling of arms to Taiwan has cause been a significant issue in the relationship, and the relationship seemed to improve and peak around 2016/2017.
The year 2018 set the relationship into freefall with the Hong Kong issues. However, during these negative trends in the relationship, China based on word frequency has maintained an open door to cooperation, mutualism, and of bilateralism.
