/ A lot of people, particularly those obsessive EU cheerleaders on Twitter, don’t understand that the EU wants to permanently dictate rules and regulations for every business in the UK - not just those that export to the EU. It’s unprecedented and it’s unacceptable.
/ Level Playing Field rules are pretty standard and shaped in a consistent way in FTAs. But the EU is demanding terms from the UK that no other country has ever been asked to accept, simply so the EU can continue to control and affect major parts of UK economic activity.
/ The same is true of fisheries. The EU seems to think because UK membership enabled Brussels to control who fished in UK waters and what they could catch, that must continue after the UK has become self governing. It is a ludicrous mindset.
/ Could you imagine your next door neighbour demanding that they must have control to tell you what you can grow in your greenhouse, take what they want from it and tell you what you are allowed to take from it?
/ How about your neighbour pressuring you to let them dictate the rules for what comes in and out of your garden? And then that neighbour saying you can’t bring food into your own garden because they think it might end up in their garden? ‘Bizarre’ doesn’t come close does it?
/ The UK wants a trade deal. To agree how goods and services can be bought and sold between the UK and EU and how they can be moved back and forth. That’s all. Why should the EU have any political or legal control over the UK in return for that?
/ Would those EU cheerleaders think it acceptable if the UK told the EU that to secure free access to the UK market, Brussels should follow a large number of UK regulations permanently, so every EU business has to follow UK rules, even if they don’t export anything to the UK?
/ Or that UK farmers must have the right to herd cows, pigs and sheep across the continent, and the UK govt dictates to the EU how many cows, pigs and sheep the French, Dutch, Danes etc are allowed to slaughter? Or else all EU meat will be banned from the UK in retaliation.
/ The EU’s demands are laughable, deluded and unacceptable. Arrogance on steroids. Not only should the UK walk away from trade negotiations today, it should also terminate the WA and NI protocol, and cease payments we agreed to in order to have a FTA with the EU.
/ It’s time to end this. The EU thinks the UK will come begging for a FTA after a no deal. But businesses and the economy always adapt. New suppliers and customers will be found. Brussels will have spited its own face in its pathetic attempts to stop the UK governing itself.
/ Enough now. Walk away. Terminate the damaging WA. Let Barnier explain to EU businesses why their UK market access will be impacted for the sake of the EU’s pathetic attempts to exert power over a non member state.
/ Addendum... This tweet from Bruno Waterfield shows once again the EU’s double standards. It wants to impose rules on the UK that the EU will not apply to itself. Bad faith doesn’t come close to describing this behaviour. https://twitter.com/brunobrussels/status/1334943312147599360
/ It is also worth noting the EU is trying to deal with EU fishermen overfishing the western Mediterranean by cutting their quotas, causing huge protests. The EU's big idea is to continue controlling UK fishing waters so it can direct the EU boats to plunder those instead.
/ What has become clear is the EU was being dishonest when it asked for talks to restart because it was ready to move. It has shown bad faith at every stage of this process. https://twitter.com/tnewtondunn/status/1335297399904940033
