One under-recognized aspect of the harm that's taken place under the Trump administration is its impact on the private sector. Thread. 1/N
Google had already abandoned "Don't Be Evil" in 2015, but when Trump took office, a lot of us still viewed them as a mixed bag, a possible ally in standing up to what was to come despite also being responsible for significant harms. 2/N
Over the past four years, we've seen a sharp turn from ambivalence about evil to outright trying to court evil and be evil. What happened? 3/N
Well I'm not an insider or expert on any of this, so maybe I'm off-base, but from the outside it looks like Google (and I'm picking on them but this is a lot of the industry and probably other industries as well) got the message... 4/N
...that pandering to fascism was going to be good for business, and even necessary to avoid active harm to their business for not cooperating and pandering. 5/N
Whether true or not, this furthered the careers of fascists within these companies, and brought new ones (think Miles Taylor, for instance) in to build the alliances they believed they needed. 6/N
Now what happens when the current fascist regime unravels? These folks are still there in corporate positions they got from playing up the need to pander to fascism, and they're not going to walk away. 7/N
And Democrats don't have a reputation for illegal interference in private sector to punish those who weren't loyal to them, so the reverse effect isn't going to happen. 8/N
So now, whatever fixes we make to government, we have a private sector full of fascist shitheads who rose to power as a result of Trump, and who are going to keep "Let's Be Evil" going as long as they can. WTF do we do about it? 9/N
