ICYMI: A record number of women will serve in state legislatures in 2021. Gonna dig in here a bit more on the details that @chelseahill13 and I share in our post about this milestone. #GenderLens2020

Women will hold just over 30% of state legislative offices nationwide in 2021. This exceeds the current level (and record) of women state legislators at 2,162 (29.3%).

But we are still a ways away from 50%....
In 2021, women will represent 50% or more of state legislators in just one state: Nevada. Women will hold at least 50% of seats in at least 2 state senates (NV and RI) and 4 state houses (NV, CO, NM, & OR).
How do gains for women in state legislatures from 2020 to 2021 compare to the gains from 2018 to 2019?

✅ Gains overall were > for women as a result of election 2018

✅ D women saw a net ⬆️ of nearly 300 seats as a result of election 2018 & R women's stleg representation ⬇️
From 2020 to 2021, the number of *both* D and R women will ⬆️ in state legislatures, but the gains for R women will likely be greater than those for D women as a result of election 2020. This mirrors the partisan story (and reversal from 2018) at the congressional level.
Republican women's gains as a result of election 2020 will not close the partisan gap in women’s state legislative representation. Based on results as of December 1, 2020, Republican women will be about one-third of all women state legislators.
Based on results determined as of 12/1/20, at least 30 states will see an ⬆️ in women state legislators, 9 states will see a ⬇️, and 6 states will have the same number of women state legislators as they did on Election Day 2020. Outcomes are too close to call in 5 states.
Based on results as of 12/1/20, at least 18 states will see an ⬆️ in Democratic women state legislators, 11 states will see a ⬇️, and 11 states will have = number of Democratic women state legislators as they did on Election Day 2020. Outcomes are too close to call in 9 states.
Based on results as of 12/1/20, at least 27 states will see an ⬆️ in Republican women state legislators, 9 states will see a ⬇️, and 8 states will have = number of Republican women state legislators as they did on Election Day 2020. Outcomes are too close to call in 5 states.
