it posits that the only attractive lesbian is a lesbian that is attractive to the male gaze, yes, but it further posits that *the only thing a lesbian could be attracted to* is an appearance that reflects the male gaze
when like, lmfao every femme i know has something about them and the things they like/hold important about their appearance that men and the male gaze would find weird and uncomfortable and unappealing anyway
because that is not who and what they are dressing for
but also, the things that they find attractive in women are not typically! relatable to your average straight viewer!
there are femmes and lesbians in general who are. actively seeking butchness? or genderqueerness? who are interested in capable hands or brash affect or quiet surety or a solid stance or a haircut that's done at a barbershop for $20 or the strength to hold them down/lift them up
(there are as many things that make a butch as there are that make a femme and they are not all or necessarily any of these, but you understand my point)
lesbians are attracted to appearances, mannerisms, behaviours that straight people just aren't, or aren't in the same way, so the presentation of 2 straight-looking femmes as the only queer sapphic shit we see circumscribes both who are are, AND what we want
and you know, sometimes a skinny white femme is into a skinny white femme and one is blonde and one is brunette!

i think the thing that kills me is that like. the thing that i am wildly attracted to above all else is the open display of queerness, whether femme or butch or somewhere in between, and that's what all of this media is fucking terrified of showing
also i would like to note that a lot of the language i used centers on lesbians - i'm a lesbian and these are my particular frustrations *as* a lesbian, but not all sapphic representation is about lesbians specifically and lesbians are not like, only attracted to other lesbians
this shit applies across the board of sapphic-associated gender/sexuality/attraction - these are the terms with which i can speak most authoritatively & passionately, but please consider this thread and my twitter in general an open space for sapphic identifying people & content
