You’ve read the research, you know the data. But do you need a reminder of the human beings behind the numbers? Do you need motivation to demand that Congress act NOW?

Here are *some* of the people who’ve reached to NLIHC in the last few weeks. (Thread)
After she lost her job during a shutdown, a single mom fell behind on rent. She now has a part-time job cleaning homes & is keeping up with rent, but her landlord filed for eviction to collect back-rent. She’s scared she and her kids will become homeless.
A pregnant woman just weeks away from giving birth is being evicted from her apartment. She’s desperate for any help or assurance that she’ll have a home for her and her baby.
An essential hospital worker & her son who returned from college due to COVID-19 are being evicted - her landlord refused to renew her lease to get around the CDC moratorium. She doesn’t know how to protect herself and has nowhere to go if evicted.
A woman who finally has a steady and reliable income again after losing her job during the pandemic. Now her landlord is trying to evict her for back rent.
A woman who worked in restaurants for 35 years, and is now facing eviction after losing her job during a shutdown. She says she can’t sleep because she’s so worried about losing the roof over her head.
A single parent on the verge of eviction reached out to her local rental assistance program. They aren’t taking new applications because they ran out of funds. She doesn’t know where else to turn.
A young couple is staying in a utility trailer after losing their homes to eviction. With the temperatures dropping as winter approaches, its getting to the point where they can’t stay in the trailer anymore, and they have nowhere else to go.
A single mother whose landlord gave her just 3 days notice to leave her home after missing 1 rent payment. She’s tried to get help from her local rental assistance program, but was told she’s not eligible.
Another single mom with two kids was given 3 days to vacate their home, even though she’s not even 30 days behind on her rent. She is terrified because she and her children have no where to go.
A woman in Colorado lost her job when the city cut back public transportation and she couldn’t get to work. She has an underlying health condition that makes her more susceptible to COVID-19, and can’t access UI benefits. She’s months behind on rent.
A single mom is a month and a half behind on rent. she just got a new job but her landlord is threatening to evict them. She says, “I just need some time, I promise, as I go about working so I can pay him something at a time.”
A family of 4 are living at an extended stay motel, the parents were laid off from their jobs and their UI benefits have expired. They can’t pay rent. She says, “I’m extremely overwhelmed with the anxiety of being kicked out b/c we have nowhere else to go.”
An elderly woman writes to say, “I need help with my rent. Please. I don't want to be homeless.”
We get these calls/emails week after week, month after month. Each one representative of millions more, all suffering tremendously b/c when a once in a century global pandemic hit & they desperately needed help, their gov’t faltered, fumbled, failed.
It will get so much worse when the CDC eviction moratorium expires on December 31. At that point renters will owe between $30B and $70B in back rent, more than they can ever pay off. Tens of millions of people could lose their homes this winter.
The consequences would be catastrophic- for children, families, communities, and for our country’s efforts to contain the pandemic. We can’t let it happen. Renters can’t wait any longer for help. People who are homeless can’t wait any longer for help.
Contact your member of Congress NOW. Demand that they end the suffering, stop evictions and provide #RentReliefNOW. https://twitter.com/dianeyentel/status/1334955563495645188?s=21 https://twitter.com/dianeyentel/status/1334955563495645188
Then join us in urging the CDC to extend, improve & enforce its eviction moratorium. They have authority to extend it NOW to provide some security to renters on the verge of homelessness. 700+ orgs are already signed on, add yours. https://twitter.com/dianeyentel/status/1333815928098840577?s=21 https://twitter.com/dianeyentel/status/1333815928098840577
