An online course is teaching + marketing + ....

Operations!

I'm sharing what I’ve learned from running two cohort-based courses simultaneously as the course manager.

Here's how to create a great onboarding experience for your students 👇
@david_perell says, “Students should feel challenged, but never confused.”

Your students need a learning environment that makes them feel safe and supported so they can fully concentrate on leveling up their skills.
A solid onboarding process clarifies a lot of questions, sets the right expectations, and especially the mood for what’s to come.

There are 4 parts to creating an exceptional onboarding experience:
- survey
- skill assessment
- email
- call
Onboarding survey:

Allows you to get to know your students, their pain points, and goals better.

When students are asked to articulate their goals for the course, they're more committed to achieving them.
What the survey should cover:

- Demographics
- Background
- How they heard about your course
- What the biggest challenge is they’re trying to overcome
- What they want to get out of the course
- Anything specific you could do to make the course a success for them
Skill assessment:

How will your students and you know that they have improved?

A self-assessment of their abilities at the beginning and the end of the course.

Identify the key skills your course focuses on. Let your students rate their confidence in their abilities.
Onboarding email:

Communicates everything your students need to know and do when they sign up:

- Course schedule
- Onboarding survey
- Preparations or pre-work
- How to access the course community
- How to schedule their onboarding call
- Who to reach out to with questions
Onboarding call:

Meeting your students for an onboarding call has a ton of benefits:

- Dig into how you can provide the best experience
- Run through how the course works
- Answer any questions to ensure everyone starts on the same page
- Students can already meet each other
