Air “fresheners” are an assault to your health. I can’t believe how normalized these have become.
You don’t have access to the full ingredient list for most air freshener products sold in the US. This is always a bad sign.
Most contain phthalates and galaxolide (hormone disruptors), acetaldehyde and benzene derivatives (carcinogens), pinene and limonene (creates formaldehyde), aldehydes, phenol, cresol, and so many more TOXIC chemicals.
These products “fix” odors in 4 ways:
1. By killing nerve endings in your nasal passages
2. Coating your nasal passages with an “oily film”
3. Using “fragrances” to cover the odor
4. RARELY (less than 10%) breaking down the odor itself

Our sense of smell is an ESSENTIAL evolutionary survival tool. It allows us to identify food, other animals, environmental dangers, and even affects social interactions. You can identify an enemy or a lover from their pheromones.
What can you do instead?
1. Remove the source of the bad odor. It smells bad because it needs to be cleaned or thrown out.
2. Open your windows. Get some ACTUAL fresh air.
3. Get some houseplants. These naturally purify the air and make beautiful decor!

I’m not even going to go into how awful these products are for the environment. This about your health and wellbeing. STOP DULLING YOUR SENSES!!!!
VOC (Volatile organic compound) concentrations cause eye and skin irritation, nausea, headaches, and throat irritation. In the long term, they cause damage to your liver, kidneys, endocrine system, central nervous system, and reproductive system.
