I shouldn’t have to say this but if you’re using @GetKahoot as a summative assessment tool, stop it. Allowing your students to see how they stack up against their classmates in real time doesn’t create an environment that is helping them succeed.
In fact, it is most definitely inducing anxiety in many of your students and you’re absolutely not getting an accurate picture of their learning and understanding. You’re isolating and embarrassing them and it’s not ok.
I love @GetKahoot, @quizizz and @gimkit as much as the next person but all of the good they are capable of doing for student learning is thrown out the window when they are used this way. I know because I’ve experienced it first hand.
Watching your own score compared to others’ broadcast live is incredibly disheartening unless you’re one of those on the top of the scoreboard. And for many, it just causes a downward spiral and mental shut down.
So, stop it. Use the tools to create community and have fun- yes. But please please PLEASE allow students the time and space to show their learning. Surely by 2020 we can find better ways than this to do that. Right? #edutwitter
