A thread on Xiao’s tragic backstory

(This is being made before the release of Xiao so things might change before his release!)

SPOILERS BELOW

General facts

His birthday is April 17th and his age is estimated to be over 2,00 years old.

His constellation, Alatus Nemeseos, is Latin for “Winged Nemesis”

His favorite food is Almond Tofu because the texture reminds him of the dreams he’s eaten.

Nameless Past

Xiao was not always named Xiao, for a long time he was nameless and this is associated with a very dark period in his life. An evil god had gotten ahold of Xiao and used his weakness (unknown) against him to manipulate and force Xiao to do this god’s dirty work

The things Xiao was forced to do included killing people, crushing people’s hopes, and devouring their dreams. It’s been mentioned that during this period, it pained him to commit such acts of cruelty, but he had no choice but to continue.

This continued until that fateful day..

On the battlefield during the Archon War, Xiao found his voice and freedom through Zhongli (aka Rex Lapis).

It is said that Rex Lapis killed Xiao’s previous master and freed the adepti, giving him the name Xiao. Xiao chose to serve Rex Lapis & fight off the remnants of the war

Xiao’s Name

Xiao’s name uses the characters for ghost and Xiao, put together they create the phrase Mountain Demon.

Xiao has many nicknames throughout Genshin history, he is referred to as:

After the War

Among the adepti, he is regarded as formidable and holds a level of high seniority, yet none know of him in the mortal world.

All in all, Xiao is a very fascinating and complex character. He is someone who has gone through a redemption arc and has thrived after his freedom was granted. However, he still deals with the consequences of his past actions. It haunts him everyday and will continue to haunt

Him. Despite this, Xiao chooses to protect Liyue because Rex Lapis wanted to protect it. I truly believe that Xiao can understand how beautiful and precious Liyue is to Zhongli and therefore protects it as not only a thank you for saving him, but to keep Zhongli at ease.

I know a lot of people are put off by Xiao’s brash and cold nature, but this man is not doing it because he is terrible, he’s been traumatized and manipulated to such a degree that he fears for the safety of others around him. He was nothing more than a tool of destruction for

So long, it’s hard to break that mindset when you’re regarded as nothing more than pure and overwhelming destruction by not only gods, but archons too.
