Life as an #autistic person in this world is not easy; here’s why. A thread. #autism #ActuallyAutistic /1
Because some people give me an ugly look every time, I have a meltdown. #autism /2
Because society makes eye contact a requirement despite my struggles with making eye contact. #autism /3
Because society would interpret me as being “rude” or “not listening” when I don’t make eye contact. #autism /4
Because unexpected change can happen at any time and I can’t cope with it. #autism /5
Because some neurotypicals won’t stop stigmatising autism. #autism /6
Because in my personal life, when I say that “I’m autistic” to someone, they may change their opinion of me. #autism /7
Because some people don’t like me stimming and get annoyed about it. #autism /8
Because some people expect me to behave normally and without my autism traits. #autism /9
Because some people invalidate the fact that I have a slow thinking process and expect me to do things quickly. #autism /10
Because when I find that the smell of something is too strong or when I don’t like the smell of something, some people interpret me as being “rude”. #autism /11
Because when I ask for clarification or ask for things to be repeated, people think that I “wasn’t listening”. #autism /12
Because some people give me an ugly look when I don’t laugh at a joke/sarcasm as a result of me not understanding it. #autism /13
Because in group discussions, I don’t know when it is my turn to speak so people just ignore me, leave me out and make me feel lonely. #autism /14
Because some people would force me to take part in group work and if I do take part in group work, I’m always left out and ignored; hence, this is one of the reasons why I don’t like to take part in group work. #autism /15
Because some neurotypicals know nothing about #autistic meltdowns and they just interpret them as “tantrums” or “bad behaviour”. #autism /16
