Many years back, i was traveling in Shatabdi from Delhi to Kathgodam. A foreigner couple was seated behind me. As the train pulled out of the station and the squalor became visible, the woman turned to her husband n said - "the whole country is a garbage dump!" 1/n
I was angry and hurt at those words.
And i wanted to ask them why they had come to India at all !
But in the past 2 days, those words have been ringing in my ears nonstop.
I am at my ancestral village in Mirzapur district of U.P.

I ws here last 1.5 yrs bk. Little hs changed in all tht time, except for one thing - the garbage n household waste in n around the whole village has grown 10 folds.
On paper there r 3 ponds within ths village.On ground only 1 remains,n tht too is a major public health hazard

2 of those ponds r filled up n encroachd upon by villagrs to build houses.
The 3rd is a sewage dump teemin with human excreta,household waste,mosquitos n plastic.
Wht makes me really sad is tht ths is the same pond which only 30yrs bk hd water fresh enuff for ppl to bathe in

Ths isnt the 1st time i hv noticed ths.
3yrs bk on a visit i ws so apalled by the filth tht i made a complaint abt the dirty sewage filled pond to @CMOfficeUP thru the @jansunwai_up app.
Promptly my complaint ws sent to @DM_MIRZAPUR , then to the BDO n sarpanch of the village

I got a call from BDO n the village head telling me tht they will find a way to clean up.
But like i said, that ws 3yrs bk.
Today, the situation is even worse. Due to lack of a garbage disposal systm,villagers dump their garbage right into the pond.

Streets r littered with plastic wrappers, packets and other household waste. This despite the fact that 2 -3 govt.employed sweepers come every day. Of course that is only to sign in attendance registers n disappear.

The air is heavy with smog as ppl burn li'l piles of garbage in front of their houses.They seem to b resigned to all ths.
Every person i hv spoken to abt the unhygienic n disease causing surroundings asks me how anyone can stand up to the administration alone.

But my heart aches for the village of my childhood where many a wintr evenings were spent in frnt of bonfires eating gooey jaggery,n many a summr aftrnoons were spnt watchin ppl swim in the crystal clear waters of d pond.
I'm ready to stand up alone. With ur support..
