There is seemingly a misconception about Iranian media in the west as they think all of them are state-run.

There are many privately-owned papers and outlets, like Shargh, Entekhab, Etemaad, Asr Iran and Fararu.

There are of course state-run media like Kayhan, ISNA and IRNA
Kayhan, Iran's TV, Ettelaat and some others are under the control of Iran's leader

IRNA and ISNA are in the hands of the govt

Tasnim, Fars and Mashregh belongs to IRGC
The circulation of newspapers have decreased mostly to under 2000 and they have also cut back on pages

People mostly use news sites and channels on Telegram, publishing breaking news
I should add that creating a news channel on Telegram and attracting users isn't so difficult, paving the way for the easy rise of fake news
This has created a great opportunity for hardliners and regime change activists to publish false news against each other without their real identity being revealed
The government and Judiciary are separately able to ban media and newspapers. In government, the culture ministry has a special group for banning, consisting of representatives from university, parliament and seminary.
There are also many journalists facing charges. For instance, my brother has been sentenced to prison (later changed to paying a fine) in the press court more than 20 times.
