Now seems like a good time to remind everyone working in a meat packing plant is one of the hardest jobs in America. We should never forget or take that for granted.
40+ hours a week standing in one spot on a cold cement floor doing very repetitive work in 30-40 degree temps.
Wearing heavy cold gear under a frock. Now Full PPE including a shield. So loud you have can't hear yourself talk. Bloody mess everywhere. Now a Plexiglas boxing you in your small workspace.
Meat cutting is a lot safer now then when I did it 40 years ago but a meat packing plant is still one of the most unsafe work places you can be. Knives and Saws!!
What is just described is the cut/cold side of a plant.
The hot/kill side is all together worse. Louders , Bloodier, Smellier, and HOT!! It is as close to hell at work!! I would wish it on no one.
They average pay about 17.50 an hour last I looked.
So take a minute today and say a quiet word of thanks and maybe a little prayer if you are so inclined for our packing house workers.
