Billy Gunn, who played both cricket and football for England and co-founded GM, was born on this day, 1858.

He played 11 Tests (all Ashes) without, averaging 22 with bat, and scored 25,691 runs at 33 in First-Class cricket.

He also bowled underarm lobs and kept wickets.

He twice played football for England.

He was known for throwing the football "inhuman distances", often with one hand.

In an unofficial match against Scotland, he threw the ball frequently from England's half into Scotland's penalty area at that point.

It was Gunn who forced FA to change the laws to make two-hand throwing mandatory (the Scottish version).

His nephews John and George were also Test cricketers (and Wisden Cricketers of the Year).

And along with Thomas James Moore, he founded Gunn & Moore (GM) in 1885.
