Today is a good day to remind my fellow white writers that this was the state of kidlit in 2018:
When you see agents soliciting work from BIPOC, when you see a few—out of hundreds—temporarily accepting queries from only BIPOC, it's to try to address this truly grotesque number. It's not special treatment, it's triage.
And for the "everyone should write everything" crowd... if you can't understand why it isn't that simple, how publishing historically elevates privileged voices over marginalized ones... then you probably *shouldn't* try to write everything.
I'm sure someone will huff and stomp about anti-intellectualism and censorship and whatnot, but the reality is that as of 2017, the numbers showed a clear preference for kidlit about BIPOC... when it *wasn't* authored by BIPOC:
