In 2016, when Dr. Gebru @timnitGebru noticed there were about 6 black people out of 5500+ at the largest AI Conference, her team rolled up their sleeves and in 2017, brought over 500 black researchers to NeurIPS, through the 1st Black in AI workshop which has run ever since. 1/5

This is almost a 100X improvement on the FIRST TRY. In all my career as an AI researcher, I am yet to read a paper or research methodology with this level of drastic impact. And this is in part why Dr. Gebru is to me the most impactful AI researcher I know. 2/5

If you ever dared to set the goal to improve representation 100fold in a few years, people would tell you “there just aren’t that many black people/women/X in AI”. Now - thanks to Dr. Gebru’s leadership- I know that people responding that way are simply not trying hard enough 3/5

They are trying to convince us that they are able to send men to the moon and back, and solve intelligence, yet fixing issues of representation and inclusion in their workplace is too hard of a problem for them. I no longer buy this. 4/5
