Emmanuel Macron is a politician of deep contradiction. It's difficult to work out how much is an absence of self-reflection, or a deliberate commitment to a janus-faced politics aspiring to be all things to everyone (which always risks meaning nothing to anyone) #BrutMacron
Whenever he talks of colonialism (which he called a crime against humanity), he immediately repeats his smug anecdote that young people "never lived it" invoking a generation w/ a 'chip on its shoulder' & a belief that that part of French history can't be relevant to young people
Yet he also concedes that contemporary French society doesn't not at all reflect the totality & complexity of its history, and recognises that many young people don't feel embraced by the République. Like all French presidents he talks of renewing France's relationship with ...
francophone Africa, but seems incapable of not immediately resorting to ugly stereotypes about Africans undermining their own prosperity own "having too many children" and ignoring the imbalanced/punitive fiscal relationships with former colonies
In his #BrutMacron interview he decried the absence of nuance in contemporary discourse but is himself guilty of perpetrating this. His use of the ill-defined & oft-weaponised terms "communautarisme, separatisme, anti-républicain" has varied and he has often conflated them
He abandoned candidate Macron's emphasis on the need for structural accountability for police violence & seems surprised pressure to end impunity continues. All the while presenting a false equivalence between police violence perpetrated w/power of the state & violence @ protests
He denounced citizen protests against police violence this summer as fostering "separatisme" but now acknowledges he took his foot of the gas on the issue citizens were protesting, stressing he has a plan for a new platform to submit complaints regarding discriminatory policing
IMO all of this contributes to the 'Jupiterian' image he apparently so dislikes, whereby he seems to expect people to be satisfied with passing declarations & speeches, and surprised when people challenge their contradictions and expect greater depth & commitment to follow
