Racism in medical education is real. Being a black nurse, doctor, medical student may put you in uncomfortable situations especially during clerkships. It's just interesting how when my classmates bear their souls and ask about what to do in those situations. The response back..1
From medical education is to talk about ageism, managing emotions and being called a nurse by a patient. Why are we not really addressing the full issue's? Race is something that you cannot hide. Being an immigrant and a black woman has put me in some situations where I have been
in a situation where patients have heard a fellow physician colleague of mine speak and they said " I didn't understand a word they said, they are stupid"...because they were an immigrant. I have also had other situations where the patient thought the older white man who was
actually a medical student, while the black woman who was the senior resident was completely ignored. I say all that to that, if you have nothing to say at all please don't give us stories that don't relate to us or tell us to read an ARTICLE.
And when you wonder why minority medical students don't open up to tell you their stories, KEEP THAT SAME ENERGY. If medical education doesn't want to deal with our concerns, how can we expect our fellow classmates even notice this and be allies & call this BS out.
