1/ Thank you so much @janevandis! Better understanding neurobiology can help us in so many areas of medicine! The other important piece of this paper is again reiterating the role sex hormones have on the immune system (which we also don't totally understand lol). #COVID19 https://twitter.com/janevandis/status/1334670009189036032
2/ The other important piece of this paper is again reiterating the role sex hormones have on the immune system and potentially both acute and long #COVID19. @VirusesImmunity @taka_takehiro at @YaleIBIO have already done some amazing work in this space: https://twitter.com/ErinSandersNP/status/1315425701911236610?s=20
3/ Here I wrote about differences in T-cells, but with this new paper, I'm starting to have more questions about B-Cells in females and the role of autoimmunity in #LongCovid. https://twitter.com/ErinSandersNP/status/1320035087921090569?s=20
4/ Estrogens influence the phenotype of T helper cells and have profound effects on B cell maturation, differentiation, activity & survival. Increasing evidence has indicated a pivotal role of B cell in the initialization & acceleration of autoimmune disorders #COVID19 #LongCovid
5/ Genome-wide association studies have identified hundreds of gene polymorphisms associated with B-cell functions and differentiation and dsyregulated activation, may increase the susceptibility to autoimmune development. However, this also remains poorly understood.
6/ A few months back, I was thinking specifically about pregnant women, & what we were seeing in how surprisingly not as many were getting infected. However, when they were hospitalized there was a higher chance that they would be in the ICU and on mechanical ventilation.
7/ I wondered if in #SARSCoV2, is the natural state of immune suppression to gestate a fetus actually protective, but the increased state of coagulopathy at baseline and presence of a new organ (placenta) put them at a higher risk for unique complications of #COVID19?
8/ I am worried about #LongCovid. I worry how women's physical symptoms have long been dismissed by the healthcare systems as hysteria or anxiety
80% of autoimmune diseases are in women.

9/ I worry how in historical context, womxn have disproportionately suffered long term sequelae after viral epidemics, and that we are already seeing the same pattern play out in #LongCovid.
@ahandvanish @Dr2NisreenAlwan @AthenaAkrami @mclemoremr @DrJenGunter @janevandis
10/ Futhermore there has been little investigation on #COVID19 and menstruation, as well as the potential impact on future fertility of women

11/ So many questions still to answer. But there is VALUE in asking questions and synthesizing across disciplines. There is VALUE in connecting the silos of medicine and science. And I hope beyond measure that #COVID19 is a catalyst for incorporation of multidisciplinary work.
