One thing that has bothered me about the linguistic debate in Quebec is the assumption that “the English language in Quebec” and “Quebec anglophone culture” are interchangeable. English will never disappear here, but that doesn’t mean the community doesn’t need cultural support.

It’s not just Quebec, of course — a lot of local media (TV, radio and print) are replaced in whole or in part by repurposed national media to save money across the country. But the end result is the same, where we don’t see our community reflected in our media.

There are those who believe that Quebec anglophone culture is indistinguishable from Ontario anglophone culture or New York anglophone culture. Those people would probably balk at the suggestion that Quebec culture is indistinguishable from France.
