Past couple weeks, Zhao Lijian & Chen Weihua have attracted a lot of attention for their Twitter activities. At first, one might look at the comments & think, that’s not very diplomatic, maybe too harsh. Yet, one must look through context of events this past year.
2020 has been a strange year for Chinese. We discovered an unknown disease, struggled to control it for a month, finally suppressed and almost completely eliminate it within two. Simultaneously this disease started to “pop up” elsewhere. We gave warning, it wasn’t headed.
By all means, our antivirus methods were extremely successful and we’re one of few countries to return “back to normal.” What do we get in return for our success? This past year has been absolute worst in recent memory in terms of open, unbridled hatred against us.
2020 has seen US President call COVID-19 the “China plague,” European papers & “cartoonists” deface our country & flag, “reporters” accuse us of “letting the virus spread to the world” despite all evidence. These elite slanders then trickle down to the public.
Must we endure indisputable racism, sitting here politely while they call us virus, say our ancestors are thieves, say we are disgusting for eating things we don’t even eat? When western state & media actors are allied against us for whole year, there’s only so much tolerance.
So, Chinese are fed up. This entire year we’re a punching bag for the Trumps, Blackburn’s, ASPI’s & CNN’s of the world. We’ve been maligned, disparaged. Our 1st reaction isn’t to escalate, but to save face for others, but our politeness has its limits. You just found it.
