If you're trying to get into VC, it can be helpful to think about the fact that many firms want new prof's to be able to "hit the ground running". This is why many specs mention inv banking, equity rsch, or BD experience. (Consulting too but some ppl think it's less relevant.)1/3
...In i-banking, you get lots of experience valuing co's and some exp evaluating / diligencing co's. In equ rsch, there's less exposure to M&A processes, but the depth of analysis on co's is greater. BD matches the skill set well, as deciding whether to buy a co as a corp...2/3
...is similar to deciding whether to invest. (Though less exposure to public mkts.) Of course, prior inv roles are also ways into VC. These aren't the only ways to enter VC, but if your resume doesn't line up w/ these skill sets, look for ways to gain (& market) these skills. 3/3
