Employment was little changed in Nov, up just 0.3%. In today’s Jobs Report the impact of new restrictions in western Canada are evident. Overall, 574K are still without work, compared to Feb levels, and another 448K are working less than 1/2 of their usual hours #canlab
Employment in construction is up, but down in culture & recreation sector, and food & accomm. These businesses are signally further cuts ahead. The workers who have been able to work from home have already recouped Feb-Apr losses. This is our K-shaped recovery in action.
Long-term unemployment held steady in Nov following big increases in Sept and Oct. One-quarter of all unemployed had been out of work for more than 26 weeks. Over 1/2 of these households are reporting difficulty meeting daily expenses.
Caregiving demands continue to constrain women’s employment. While employment levels are edging back, many more mothers are working less than half their usual hours. Year-over-year basis, there were 55% more mothers in this group. #canfem
