Thread about @landemore's #OpenDemocracy

An open democracy is a new paradigm that takes seriously the ideal of popular rule as rule by the people. Has 5 principles:
1. Participation rights
2. Deliberation
3. Majoritarian principle
4. Democratic representation
5. Transparency https://twitter.com/ClaudiaChwalisz/status/1333826573275947008
Starts w/ premise that 'rule by the people' means everyone has equal chance of accessing power. That's not the same thing as direct democracy. Direct rule is only possible in specific moments on specific issues. Mass voting in referendums is not a feasible way to govern a polity
Daily practice of politics will have to be done through representatives - though not ones selected via principle of elections. The model of open democracy is about representing and being represented in turn.
The principles of #opendemocracy:

1. Participation rights: people can enter power. Includes things like citizens' initiatives, any way that citizens can put things on legislative agenda, to abrogate a law that is not working
2. Deliberation: Borrow from theory of deliberative democracy developed in 1990s by Habermas, Rawls and others. The idea that laws and policies cannot have legitimacy unless product of free and equal deliberation among citizens.
3. Majoritarian principle: When there is disagreement, we solve it by taking a vote and whoever has largest number of votes on their side wins.
4. Democratic representation: Too often we mean electoral representation. But representation by election is not democratic - it is oligarchic. @landemore favours lottocratic representation where people are chosen by chance.
5. Transprency: To some degree this relates to accountability. It is what ensures that the distance between the represented and representatives does not create trouble.
