Everyone wants a world class health system that is effective, efficient, impactful, accessible, safe and value for money. Central to this is us valuing the talented, caring staff who work in it - the healthcare professionals, the support staff, the administrators & managers.
Today, the @MedCouncilIRL issued its annual workforce intelligence report, compiled based on the feedback from 21,190 doctors who retained their registration and 1,135 who withdrew from the register.
This report allows everyone to get beyond the spin about vested interests. It paints a sobering picture about the realities of the medical practise in Ireland.

If you don't have time to read the full report, the good folk in the @MedCouncilIRL Executive have helpfully prepared an executive summary.

My takeaway is that we need more Doctors and we need to treat them better.
We'll have more Doctors if:
- we allow those who graduate to practise in Ireland
- we make it attractive for them to come and stay here
- we increase training & development opportunities for all
- we fill vacant consultant posts
- we protect training time for trainees
If we do those things, not only will be increase the number of Doctors but we will make their working conditions more tolerable and hence treat them better.
It is better and more productive to be on a virtuous than a vicious cycle.

The former translates into a better healthcare system for all our people.
We have the raw materials, the detailed information and a clear plan. We just now need the societal and political will to put these together to best serve our Republic.
