As @greenparty_ie Housing Spokesperson, I raised a topical question in the Dáil about the Marianella residential complex in Rathgar. Link to video of question:
1/7
Social housing tenants in this development are being excluded from services available to their neighbours, like access to the gym, rooftop terrace and pet ownership.
2/7
Currently every development in Ireland must sell 10% of its units to the council for social housing, under Part 5 of the 2000 Planning and Development Act. However, the response from the department to this question was vague considering the purpose of Part 5.
3/7
Prior to this Act, most of our social housing was built by the state, leading to social isolation with underdeveloped service infrastructure being common. Part 5 aimed to bring those in need of social housing into pre-existing communities.
4/7
This Act was designed to bring people together, regardless of class or means, but this is not happening. Please listen to the words of the Marianella social housing residents themselves: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-e&q=Part+5+of+the+2000+Housing+Act
5/7
They speak to a lack of dignity or honour in their current living situation. Even though Dublin 6 is a “leafy suburb” and their accommodation is in a luxury development, some of the residents feel that they were better off previously.
6/7
The purpose of mixing our housing developments is #socialinclusion, unifying our communities instead of segregating them. Therefore I have submitted a PQ to @DarraghOBrienTD , who is also concerned for these residents, asking what he can do in his role for them.
