1. Finally, it feels safe to announce that the latest @MekongReview is out! You may recall that we had trouble printing the magazine in HK last time. Well, that effort has been superseded. Getting this one out was even more difficult. It will take a few tweets to tell the tale.
2. Given what had happened in HK, we decided to use a printer in Thailand. We lined one up in Bangkok. All was set to go, but the printer decided not to proceed. Why? Our lead story, on the protests in Thailand. They said they didn’t want to get into trouble with the authorities.
3. Quickly, we switched to Sydney. Again, a last-minute hitch: the printer didn’t have the right paper. Next, a printer in Penang. It was a risk, as Malaysia was about to go into lockdown. We took a punt, but it wasn’t to be. The printing was done the day the country shut down.
4. With copies stuck at the printer’s in Malaysia, we thought we’d give Bangkok another try. We approached a new printer. For the third time, all was set—and this time it happened. We were elated when they sent these proofs through.
5. Meantime, back in Penang, with help from friends on both sides of the strait we managed to piggyback on a delivery to Singapore. Ten days later, copies arrived and were hastily mailed out to subscribers and shops in Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia.
6. So there you have it: Vol. 6, no. 1, out in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Australia. It’s the first time @MekongReview has been printed in two countries simultaneously. Thanks to everyone who helped out—it’s time for a drink (Aussie wine, of course).
