Grading isn’t fun but easily the worst thing about the end of the term is hearing people talk about their baffling students who almost certainly have uncontrolled ADHD
Not starting a task bc of dysfunctional executive control from the inside feels like... just not doing it! It’s not like beep beep neurological problem, you... just do not do the thing you absolutely need to do, while telling yourself you’re about to, and about to, and about to
I didn’t talk to any of my professors when this was happening to me, because I (probably correctly) felt like I would have to explain myself, and I literally had nothing to say. Was I supposed to go in like “I have not finished the paper, because I just am not working on it”
Not turning in papers and not talking to your professors about it doesn’t work so I failed out. Talking to your professors about a problem that is inscrutable to you, or just feels like being a piece of shit, also doesn’t work that well tho
If u insist these students explain why they aren’t getting work done they will likely lie to you because the actual reasons are impenetrable to them and “I just didn’t do it” is not an explanation. Not being able to explain yourself fucking sucks and there aren’t good options
Idk I think students don’t actually owe their instructors explanations of why they are having trouble or details about what’s happening! We can just be flexible. It’s cool
people are afraid of being flexible with extensions in case a student that doesn’t really need it “takes advantage” of it to go to a sweet party or something but idk is the worst case scenario really a student has a good time. i am willing to take that risk
