This might be biased due to my own research interests (cf. my twitter handle), but it has also seemed like a topic that has been experiencing something of a revival in interest lately. Not surprised to see that so many classicists have been interested in the sea either. I’ve wondered whether it might have to do with a common fascinating with “different worlds” though with two different types of alterity for the sea and antiquity.
Possibly also related to interest in alternate worlds is that I’ve noticed a similar correlation between people who love fantasy/science fiction and those who are interested in the sea. (Jules Verne might be the most prominent historical example of such.)
