This is *actually* big news folks. Leaving it in the ground is the least-pulled lever of climate action, there's still a long way to go, but this is a big message, particularly to us here in Norway. https://uk.reuters.com/article/denmark-oil/denmark-cancels-future-oil-and-gas-hunt-in-north-sea-idUKL8N2IJ6E3
Denmark had already banned *exploration* (finding new places to dig it up) in inland waters, and drilling on land. This expands the ban to drilling outside of those areas. https://stateofgreen.com/en/partners/state-of-green/news/the-danish-government-ends-oil-and-gas-exploration-and-drilling-on-land/

A few charts from the BP_SRWE2020 since I've got it open anyway
- Denmark is 3rd biggest oil producer in Europe, but relatively, not v big
- Oil production has been falling since 2004. Oil consumption has *not* (time to ditch those fossil cars, DN)
- Denmark has a lot of VRE

Interestingly enough, Denmark still produces slightly more gas than it consumes, but consumption of gas is falling (every grid with high renewables usually has *too much* gas - ever if we accept the 'backup' argument then you only "need" a tiny amount)
Important context! https://twitter.com/ruth_mottram/status/1334773472094982144
Extra charts: Denmark is #37 in the world as of 2019 in terms of total production amount for oil, about 0.25% of total world oil production. 44th in the world for gas production, ~0.21% of total.
^^ So when I say "there's still a long way to go", you know what I mean, but many of the countries down the thinner-end of these charts are going to make a big, public deal of exiting these industries, and it's hopefully going to feed upwards.
Okay one more: if we extrapolate Denmark's decline in oil production from 2004 - 2019, which has been quite steady, it'll stop by around 2025 ish (though the rate of decline has slowed slightly over this period too....so presumably it'll continue decelerating)
