So often fantasy costume/character designers lean on the Vaguely "Oriental" costumes that end up looking uninspired and directionless, when there's SO many cool designs you could create by studying a particular traditional attire and adapting it to fit the genre/character!
It feels like lot of the African/Asian inspired costume designs are built off (outdated) bodies of work with that same amorphous look popular in the 70's instead of sourcing inspiration from actual attires?
You know, the crop top, cinched waist baggy serouel (call them harem pants and i will sue you), E asian inspired sleeves/collar. And look, I love the look as much as the next guy but if that's the Only look there is for your characters of color .. I, for one, am bored
And even if you didn't account for how much designs could stand to improve & evolve from the current stereotype, there's a lot to be said about fantasy characters with a concrete cultural inspo? No more token racially ambiguous character for diversity scraps! I've had enough!
i just think that this modernized Algerian karakou would make for an iconic silhouette 😔
