Perspectives for Iowans: Total Iowa Covid-19 death toll is equivalent to the largest community in my rural county. If the entire city of Tama, Iowa died from a disease in 10 months, would the governor have acted differently? Would you?
With approximately 10% of Covid patients suffering long term or permanent disabilities/symptoms (WHO), Iowa total positive cases would be about the same as the population of Marshalltown, the largest community in Marshall County.
If everyone in Tama, Iowa died and everyone in Marshalltown, Iowa initially survived, but became disabled, critically or even terminally ill within 10 months, would the governor have acted differently? Would you?
Nationally, the total Covid death toll is about the same as the entire population of Des Moines and Ames combined. And if 10% of all cases are critical/long term, that's half of the state of Iowa.
If everyone in Des Moines and Ames died, and half the state suffered long term or permanent conditions from the disease in 10 months, would the president have acted differently? Would the governor? Would you?
We can easily be desensitized to tragedy or preventable deaths when spread out over time or geography. (Example: More Americans die from smoking every 3 days than died in 9/11 attacks.)
Perspectives matter, do not become desensitized to failures of our governor to do her job and prioritize public safety. We must hold those responsible accountable to their actions/inactions. Don't forget how we got here. Stay angry, Iowa. '22 will be here before you know it.
