A plea to EM bound applicants: The system is broken. While we work on long term solutions, we ask that you help us temporarily fix it. If you have more than 12 interviews, please start canceling/declining.

1/6 AđŸ§”of data & thoughts:
In a non-scientific poll of program directors (et al) by @CORD_EM representing 43 unique programs across the country,

- 74% suspect top applicants were holding onto more interviews than usual &
- 70% suspect that average students are struggling to reach 12 interviews

But the data is clear: the probability of matching into EM is >95% at 12 programs with diminishing returns thereafter

(& thus the reasoning behind the recommendations of the All EM Org Consensus Statement: https://www.emra.org/be-involved/be-an-advocate/working-for-you/residency-application-process/)

Based on an informal poll of 174 EM bound applicants performed on 12/3/20 during an @emresidents Hangout, 30% of students have >12 interviews that could be cancelled/declined to benefit the 53% that have 9 or less

Disclaimer: data not verified; potential selection bias

2,665 EM PGY1 spots were offered in 2020 (w/ 13 unfilled)

Given the YOY increase in EM residencies across the US, the # of positions offered this year will be higher. BUT, the number of applicants in 2020 is essentially equivalent to 2018: 4,200 = 4,271 @ACEPNow

COVID has disrupted the residency application process, but three truths persist:

1⃣ EM is all about the team; we each have a role to play
2⃣ EM is *the* best speciality in the universe
3⃣ We're all in this together!
