I'd anticipated that Discovery was going to do essentially an after-school-special for Adira's coming out of the closet. Like, I assumed that they would more-or-less look to the camera and explain things to cis viewers who may not have heard about trans ppl #StarTrekDiscovery
I suppose it's nice for things to be chill and understated, b/c I do think that's more accurate world building for how they are far in the future. On the other hand, I feel like I wanted a little more than what we got in this episode #StarTrekDiscovery
Adira told us that they use they/them pronouns, which is neat! But we didn't even get to hear them describe their gender in their own terms. I'd really like to hear about that! #StarTrekDiscovery
We only hear Adira say "I never felt like a she" which tbh makes me cringe b/c I really do not like the term "a she". Pronouns do not equal gender. Adira could have just said "I don't like being called she/her" #StarTrekDiscovery
In the final scene Dr. Culber refers to Adira as they/them so I guess that Stamets told him about Adira's pronouns off-screen? I would have like to see that scene! #StarTrekDiscovery
I don't like the idea that Stamets told Culber about Tal's pronouns without asking Adira if that was okay to do??? Stamets should have asked Adira if they were comfortable being out / using they/them with other crew members #StarTrekDiscovery
The fact that Adira wasn't previously out to anybody besides Grey - and they didn't chose to come out to Disco crew for a while - I wonder about the degree to which non-binary ppl were accepted on their prior ship?? #StarTrekDiscovery
I'm not sure how to read Stamets reaction of just saying "okay" in response to Adira's coming out. I mean that's not bad, but idk if its good either? I want for Disco to be modeling what is good behavior/response when someone comes out to you #StarTrekDiscovery
Adira says "I'd never told anybody else but Grey" and honestly that's when Stamets should have asked them a follow up question. But we were robbed of any such conversation #StarTrekDiscovery
Tbh it's also unclear if Adira chose to come out to Stamets b/c they knew that he is in the LGBT community vs if it was just b/c they work together and had gotten to be friends #StarTrekDiscovery
I have a concerning suspicion that everybody will be using they/them for Adira for the rest of the season but the show won't have any further discussion of their gender. which is okay but also not wanted in terms of representation?? #StarTrekDiscovery
I wanted to Discovery to show a positive model for coming out as non-binary, both in terms of what to say and how to react. And, ummm, just based on this episode . . . it doesn't seem like we're gunna get that #StarTrekDiscovery
I'd assumed that the point of Adira using she/her pronouns at first was so that there could be a very-special-episode about coming out, thereby teaching the audience about non-binary people. But I guess we're not doing that?? #StarTrekDiscovery
If the extent of the representation was just gunna be a character who uses they/them pronouns (which is still good and good and nice!), then tbh I would have preferred that Adira used they/them as soon as we met them #StarTrekDiscovery
