I'd love to read a detailed story about how WB renegotiated all of their backend deals to make it possible to release their whole 2021 slate direct to HBO Max and not alienate A-list directors, movie stars, and co-financiers. That's a very complicated situation.
Some context: in 2019 WB co-financed "Joker" with an outside independent financier. The film cost $55m to make and grossed over $1B worldwide. How do Warners make good if they have an equivalently sized "hit" on HBO Max from their 2021 theatrical slate?
There are some vague answers in this interview, which is honestly very interesting but also raises more questions for me. Fascinated to see how this all plays out. https://www.vox.com/recode/22151073/warner-bros-hbo-max-movies-jason-kilar-warnermedia-interview?scrollnoblockerrefresh=1
