(Thread) Today is #IDPWD2020 and I was able to produce a radio show where that was something we actually talked about. A little over 24 years ago, a doctor told my parents that I might not survive birth because they couldn’t find my brain on the ultrasound.
There are people who I have met throughout my life that have treated me in such a way that would make you believe I didn’t have a brain. When I took a home economics class, the teacher would only let me fold clothes because “that’s all I was good for.”
I am incredibly grateful that I have supportive parents and was involved in a very tight-knit disabled sports community with people I could look up to like @BillyBridges18. If not for them I definitely would not be in the place I am today.
Is life challenging for a disabled person? Yes, absolutely. But disabled people are also capable of accomplishing a whole lot if they’re given the same opportunities as their able-bodied counterparts. All they need is an opportunity.
There are people that took a chance on me, and now I’m able to live out my childhood dream of working in broadcasting. I hope, when the pandemic is over, that more disabled people are given that same chance.
