STATE AID

1. How bizarre. I sat & watched Michael Gove & David Frost during a Select Committee meeting a few weeks back & the information was positive regarding state aid within our negotiations with the EU.
2. The EU had initially wanted the UK to follow their rules on state aid which are more stringent than those of the WTO. But the EU had accepted it wasn't going to be accepted within the parameters of a CETA style trade agreement.
3. But according to several news outlets, Monsieur Barnier has backtracked & is now wanting the EU's state aid rules to be adopted. IMO it's not an area where we will capitulate as it requires asking the EU permission prior to granting state subsidies.
4. And if the EU consider a state aid scheme unlawful, the subsidised business has to repay the monies granted.

As current members of the WTO, the UK already follows their state aid rules, so we would default to this position in the event of no deal.
