Red Sox deal hard-throwing LHP Yoan Aybar - the only member of their 40-man roster who wasn’t at the Alternate Site - for potential UT IF Christian Koss. The Rockies took Koss out of UC Irvine in the 12th rd of the 2019 draft; he was viewed as a solid glove (SS capable) but
With questions about whether he’d hit. But in his 2019 pro debut in the Pioneer League (where the ball flies), he raked, hitting .332/.447/.605 w/11 HR and almost as many BBs (35) as Ks (43). He has a chance to be a RHH utility player.
Aybar has had intriguing tools ever since the Sox signed him in 2013 (Same year as Devers) as an OF. But he didn’t hit enough to stay in the OF, and as a converted P, he’s still learning, with uncertainty about whether he’ll be ready to pitch in big lgs before exhausting options.
But, Aybar throws hard (he’s been in the upper-90s) and has shown flashes of a wipeout slider. There were days where he looked ready to get big leaguers out, others where he couldn’t navigate HiA lineups in ‘19. No floor but mid- to late-inning upside.
The Sox also open a spot on the 40-man roster by dealing Aybar.
