MATCH REVIEW THREAD: Arsenal 4-1 Rapid Vienna. Arteta's men continued to impress in the Europa League with another convincing performance. In this thread, I provide an in-depth match review. Likes/RTs so that more Gooners can see this would mean a lot to me, enjoy! 😁🔴
FIRST HALF: On paper, it looked like the Arsenal boss would continue with the 4-2-3-1 system that has been deployed in the Gunners' last three fixtures in all competitions. However, Arteta tweaked the system yet again and deployed a 4-3-3 (4-1-2-3) as shown below. It's a...
system that is reminiscent to the one Pep Guardiola deploys at Manchester City, but with a few tweaks in how the FBs were utilised. Elneny would play as the 6, with both AMN and Laca playing as 8's further forward, in between the lines. In terms of the Gunners' shape during...
the build-up phases, Elneny would drop deep, show for the ball and recycle possession. As Arsenal transitioned forward, Arteta gave plenty of license to the FBs to build partnerships with the two wingers. Pepe, who is still serving his PL suspension, was playing through the left
with Nelson on the right. Essentially, Arsenal attacked in a 2-1-7 predominantly in the first half, but also a 2-2-6 at times, with either Kolasinac or Cedric drifting in, depending on which flank Arsenal were attacking through. Out of possession, the home side defended in a...
4-5-1 with Laca and AMN supporting Elneny defensively.

Regarding the first-half performance, the home side were on the front foot from the get-go. Very energetic, plenty of intensity installed within the team and the presence of fans in the stadium certainly helped the players..
on the pitch. The deadlock was broken in the 10th minute and it came from a turnover situation. After a poor throw-in from the visitors, both Elneny and AMN successfully pressured the receiver and forced a mistake. Laca latched onto the loose ball and the Frenchman riffled the...
ball into the back of the net with a fierce strike. Certainly, a goal that Arsenal's No.9. needed, who has received his fair share of criticism this season from the fans. Arteta's men looked fluid in attack and it was because the Arsenal manager allowed players to rotate freely..
and interchange. Both Cedric and Kolasinac, were very influential, continuously combining with Nelson and Pepe. This enabled both AMN and Laca to find pockets of space in the middle of the park, with Nketiah providing effective link play when dropping slightly deeper. Arsenal...
could have had a few more, with Pepe delivering a great ball from the right, but Mustafi failed to hit the target. In the 16th minute, however, the Gunners did stretch their lead following a good delivery from a corner from Nelson, and Mari converted his first for the club.
Chances continued to arise and Laca could off had his second, with his shot rebounding off the post, whilst AMN should have at least hit the target with his attempt in the box. But just before half time, Arsenal managed to get a third, which was a great team goal. Pepe is found
in space on the left, and the Ivorian manages to find the intelligent inward run made by Nelson. Reiss applies a delicate touch and Nketiah manages to convert the chance with his second attempt. A brilliant first-half performance from Arsenal.

SECOND HALF: Surprisingly, Arsenal
started the half slowly and the visitors capitalised. Runarsson parries the initial cross from the left, back into the danger area and despite Kola's two outstanding goal-line clearances, Arsenal defenders failed to push out and block the shot from Kitigawa, who made it 3-1 at the
time. But Arteta's men did respond positively from this minor set back, and continued to impose themselves and test the opposition GK. Laca forced him into making a smart stop, AMN had another opportunity to score his first of the season, and Pepe should have been more unselfish
when he had a chance to get his first of the night. But once Arteta made substitutions, the Gunners quickly got their fourth of the night. A poor thrown in from the Rapid Vienna FB, Pepe latched onto the loose ball, found the onrushing AMN, who then laid it on a plate for Hale..
End graduate ESR to score his first of the season. Arsenal continued to create chances, substitutes were all impressive and overall, it was a top performance from the Londoners. Next up is the NLD, and Gooners will hope that Arsenal can replicate this performance on Sunday.
INDIVIDUAL DISPLAYS: In between the sticks was Runarsson, and the Icelandic GK should have done better during the build-up to the only goal scored by the visitors, poorly parrying the ball back into the danger area. He looked nervous from corners as well, finding himself in
no man's land from one of them. Distribution, however, was a strong point. The two CBs Mustafi and Mari were untroubled, with the latter demonstrating good ball-playing abilities with some excellent forward passes. Mari, who despite got himself into some tough situations with his
positioning, headed in his first for the club. Elneny, playing as the 6 impressed. Constantly dropping in, evaded pressure well and recycled the ball efficiently. The Egyptian gave both Laca and AMN freedom and also made some intelligent fouls to prevent transitions. AMN was...
fantastic, playing in central midfield. Driving forward effectively, built partnerships with both Cedric and Reiss, constantly rotating and was always a threat. Despite failing to get on the scoresheet, he managed to grab a well-earned assist. Laca was also brilliant. Playing
as an 8 from the left, he was effective in dropping deep and linking the play. He played some excellent incisive passes and scored a great goal. Both FBs in Cedric and Kola were also impressive. The two created width through both flanks and knew when to invert and play deeper.
Moving onto Pepe and the Ivorian played from the left. Although Nico gave the ball away on many occasions, he was a constant threat, always positive, with Kola doing well to compliment him. The 25-year-old was crucial during the build-up for the third goal and could easily..
of had a goal/assist to his name. Nelson on the opposite flank continued to shine when given the opportunity. Intelligent off the ball movement, loves drifting inwards, very direct, developed a great partnership with Cedric and managed to grab an assist. A much-improved display
from Nketiah. Hold up play was better, was able to bring others into the game, was great in his pressing as was the whole team and scored his 4th of the season. All the substitutes impressed, with ESR in particular, showing great quality, and portrayed intelligence in his play.
Balogun also showed his qualities as a link player, with effective hold-up play. Hope you enjoyed the read. If you're new, I've recently made a YT channel where I cover Arsenal content.
