Chris’s words don’t offend me. I took it as he was admiring the passion of Steeler’s fans including female fans.
However, in his words there is some evidence of a lingering stereotype that women aren’t as into sports as men are.
A few thoughts... okay, SEVERAL THOUGHTS.

Stats do seem to back up this stereotype. A study I found showed 75% US men are more likely to be NFL fans vs 56% of US women.
However, that is just NFL and that is still majority of US women.
Also, that’s a stat about numbers, not about passion of those who are fans.

What Collinsworth should not be surprised at is that female fans exist. No one should.
No one should be surprised that passionate fans also ask intelligent, specific questions.
Sports is a lifelong learning opportunity. We will never know everything. No one will.

Now comes my rant: some people want to be the gatekeeper for how much knowledge a person needs to be a true fan.
People w/less knowledge than me are posers, those with more are stats machines.
I’ve eviscerated better men than Chris because they condescended to me abt sports.

When someone says “they don’t know football,” I wonder what they call “knowing.”
Some people act like you have to have stats and detailed knowledge of the game at your fingertips.
Actually, you do. Your phone: it’s a computer. You can look up any stats you want. So what?

Being a fan is abt enjoying the game. The players, rivalries, the stories. Jumping off the couch screaming as your team makes a fantastic play.
It does not always mean giving a detailed analysis of a zone blitz defense.
If you can do that or can recite every stat: GREAT!

Anyway, 2 stories.
1)
I attended a Super Bowl XLII party in ‘08. For most of the game it was the *men* standing around the food chatting and another woman and I glued to the TV watching the game.
I also won a door prize that night for being the 1st to name all 32 NFL teams. >>

2) I am a Steelers & football fan *because* of female fans. I didn’t get my love of sports from my dad.
That was all my mom.
So, maybe the stats show more men than women are sports minded. So be it.
But if you do come across a female sports fan — assume the best of them.
