Let me tell how bad this is: Dr. @timnitGebru is probably one of THE MOST prominent Black women in AI and in SilIcon Valley.
The same Silicon Valley where Black women make up less than 0.5% of technology leadership and workforce. This is worse than bad. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-12-03/google-s-co-head-of-ethical-ai-says-she-was-fired-over-email?srnd=technology-vp

The fact that @Google has the AUDACITY to fire a Black woman who has not only proven herself, co-wrote a seminal paper that held them and their peers accountable, and mentor other underrepresented groups, is DESPICABLE at best and racist and sexist probably.
This is BAD.
This is BAD.
Dr. @timnitGebru aside from killing it in her role as a leading AI researcher is being fired for *checks notes* producing research that has improved the very space that @Google sits in cc her co-authored work with @jovialjoy on facial recognition: https://venturebeat.com/2020/06/10/ibm-walked-away-from-facial-recognition-what-about-amazon-and-microsoft/
@Google firing Dr. @timnitGebru is Exhibit #12932412 of how tech companies move with Black women regardless of how successful, intelligent, and impactful we are.
And this is ALSO why the initiatives like the @SadieCollective @black_in_ai @Data4BlackLives @BlkInData exist.
And this is ALSO why the initiatives like the @SadieCollective @black_in_ai @Data4BlackLives @BlkInData exist.
And this is why Black people, but especially Black women, should be careful with big tech giants that are known for "tech bro culture" aka racism, sexism, etc. as Dr. @red_abebe points out here: https://twitter.com/red_abebe/status/1334635329618317312?s=20
I think it is absolutely insane, and frankly scary, that you cannot interrogate spaces that hold so much power, e.g. tech companies, corporate, academia, etc. And Dr. @timnitGebru tweet just a few days ago succinctly summarizes this phenomenon: https://twitter.com/timnitGebru/status/1333613035945144323?s=20
You what's so wild about all of this? Just a few years ago @Google was praising @timnitGebru @jovialjoy for their work on facial recognition.
You see what performative allyship gets you? Disingenuous bullshit the reeks of false promises and unwarranted firings. It's all smoke.

I'll end with this question: I am a Black woman interested in AI Bias and marginalized groups like @timnitGebru #TimnitGebru.
Does this mean that I can't ask questions that challenge the tech industry to do better w/o getting fired or black balled? I'm just asking for a friend.

And how is it ethical to fire someone who studies the ethics of your space because you.. *checks notes* don't like how she points out the unethical nature of the space? I mean you can't make this shit up.
@timnitGebru, we're here for you sis. 2021 and beyond is yours.

According to @GoogleWalkout, @Google Black representation is LESS THAN 2 PERCENT company wide. Google has nearly 100,000 employees. WOW.
You can sign a letter to show your support for @timnitGebru and use the hashtag #IStandWithTimnit #BelieveBlackWomen to show your support. This woman co-founded a movement in tech and through her that movement will be realized. https://googlewalkout.medium.com/standing-with-dr-timnit-gebru-isupporttimnit-believeblackwomen-6dadc300d382
H/t @EricaJoy: I know some of y'all hate the word performative, but this quite literally a case study in performative allyship and the opposite of sponsorship, my God:
An important article that highlights the unbreakable sisterhood (that I hope I can join someday) between @timnitGebru @jovialjoy and @rajiinio, all pioneers in research looking at the intersection of AI bias and facial recognition h/t @jovialjoy: https://twitter.com/AJLUnited/status/1334847851856334851
Your daily reminder to support Black women researchers in AI by streaming #CodedBias @CodedBias @shalinikantayya featuring @timnitGebru @jovialjoy @rajiinio @merbroussard and others who discuss very harms #TimnitGebru was trying to share: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/11/movies/coded-bias-review.html
I can attest that #CodedBias is an exceptional documentary, which I've seen twice and counting. I actually live-tweeted the first hour of the film for #BlackinDataWeek @BlkInData here

I would also like to plug @YESHICAN and the @Data4BlackLives movement that centers justice in how data is collected and evaluated as it pertains to Black Lives. @YESHICAN and @lucasmasonbrown were #Forbes30under30 last year and are incredible: https://www.forbes.com/sites/ashoka/2019/12/11/why-we-need-data-for-black-lives/?sh=2df29f927bd4
