According to Bell, Rogers, Shaw and other big telcos, the only good telecom company in Canada is one that builds its own networks head to toe. The #CRTC and policy makers have historically agreed and have treated wholesale ISPs like ugly stepchildren. 2/6
The wholesale system, which lets indies pay for using portions of big companies' networks, is supposed to give consumers choice and provide a route for ISPs to build more of their own networks. Plus, it gives the big guys lots of money. One out of three... ain't bad? 3/6
Last year, the CRTC found the big guys were grossly overcharging on wholesale and ordered them to stop and repay the indies. The big guys have delayed, delayed and delayed with arguments of "dubious merit" (the court's words, not mine). The CRTC has let them. 4/6
In spite of that, some indies continue to soldier on and are actually building. TekSavvy is plowing $250 million into networks, hoping that the CRTC actually does its job and enforces its own order. 5/6
